Many households do not place importance on basic aircon servicing. In fact, most homeowners only take action once they need an aircon repair due to aircon problems. According to experts, aircon maintenance is as important as periodic car care as it can reduce the amount of money you need to spend on repairing your aircon. Thus, if you wish to improve your aircon’s efficiency and lifetime, you must service it regularly.

The following are some of the benefits of periodic aircon maintenance:

  • Improves the lifespan of the aircon
  • Helps  increase aircon energy savings
  • Reduces the risks of call out
  • Keeps the aircon clean
  • Optimizes aircon performance

Maintaining an aircon does not require the replacement or repair of every aircon part.  That said, there are a few critical parts that need close attention.

In an aircon, the fins, coils, and filters require frequent care to ensure that the unit functions efficiently and effectively. When these components are neglected, the overall performance of the air conditioner begins to drop. It could also lead to other issues such as aircon leaks and especially the aircon not being cold.

  • Filters

The first part that needs periodic care is the filters. It is important to keep the filters clean as Dirty, clogged filters block conventional airflow thereby making the aircon not cold enough.  Not only has that, but the overall efficiency of the aircon dropped. When airflow is blocked in the unit, it bypasses the filters and carries excess dirt which ends up being deposited on the evaporator coil. This then reduces the coil’s ability to absorb heat reduces the performance of the aircon by 10 to 20 percent.

There are several types of filters and each filter has different levels of efficiency. You can service the aircon on your own by cleaning the filters at least once a month. If your home is in a dusty neighborhood, or if your aircon is used daily, the filter must be cleaned much more frequently.

  • Evaporator and Condenser Coils

As mentioned previously, air conditioner coils collect dirt over time. As such having clean filters prevent this dirt from being deposited on the coil.  That said, the evaporator coil must still be cleaned regularly.

If the aircon condenser is installed outside, it is more likely to become extremely dirty. Thus, keep an eye on the fins to know when you need to clean the coils.

  • Drains

Finally, you must make sure that the drain channels are clear. Clogged drains will have an impact on the aircon’s humidity controls and increases the risks of excess moisture getting on to the walls, carpet, and floor. In such a case, it is highly advised to engage an aircon servicing company to unclog the drainage system of the aircon. Waiting too long could lead to much more serious issues which could become an aircon emergency.
